Chondrus Crispus better known as " Irish Moss" or Carrageen Moss, is a species of red algae that grows along the rocky parts of the Atlantic coast of Europe and North America. During the Ireland's Potato Famine in the 1800's, the natives ate Irish Moss off of the rocks to survive, due to lack of food sources. How incredible is that?! When Irish Immigrants settled in Jamaica centuries ago... they referred to the Sea Moss grown in Jamaica as "Irish Moss" instead of calling it by it's proper species which would be "Genus Gracilaria".
People have adapted to calling Jamaican Sea Moss "Irish Moss" or Chondrus Crispus, although Chondrus Crispus is Scientifically "Irish Moss" and look completely different from the Gracilaria species.
